An extraordinary amount of grace and forgiveness prevailed at the bond hearing of racist killer Dylann Roof, despite his murdering nine black churchgoers to provoke a race war in America. Several family members of those who were murdered addressed the court as Roof, in handcuffs, watched expressionless via a video feed.
“We welcomed you with open arms, now every fiber in my body hurts and we’ll never be the same again,” said the mother of Tywanza Sanders. “May God have mercy on your soul.”
Alana Simmons, whose grandfather Reverend Daniel Simmons was also killed, said, “Hate won’t win.”
It’s very telling that this city of Charleston, South Carolina, held a prayer rally for the nation just last week, with Governor Nikki Haley in attendance. Then this happens within days of the rally!
Some would tend to think, “Where was God?” in all of this. And, one might respond in the grace and forgiveness the Christian family members gave to the assailant, whose bond was set at one million dollars.
May this incident become the example for America to follow in overcoming racial divisions through love, forgiveness and true harmony. If so, perhaps, the victims may not have died in vain.
Our prayers go out to the victims’ families.
